Some knowledge belongs to the combination
Collocations, formulaic sequences and partly fixed frames contain information that is not captured by knowing each component independently. The learner may know “point,” “not” and “that” yet still not have immediate access to a construction such as “The point is not that X; it is that Y.”
Formulaic-language research is one reason to take those larger units seriously. It does not imply that every sentence should be memorised whole, but it makes a vocabulary-only model of language hard to defend.
Choose the smallest unit that still contains the problem
If the problem is remembering what “wrench” means, a word is probably the right unit. If the problem is hedging a claim or organising a condition, one word cannot encode enough of the decision. A Frame can preserve the relationship while leaving slots open for new content.
This principle prevents pattern learning from becoming bloated. The answer is not “always learn chunks.” The answer is “do not make the learning object smaller than the thing you are trying to learn.”
Advanced language often needs relationships more than rarer vocabulary
At B2–C1, learners frequently possess enough vocabulary to express an idea somehow. The bottleneck can be precision, stance, discourse organisation or register. A repertoire of reusable Frames gives those decisions a concrete form that can be compared, retrieved and varied.
Words and Frames therefore belong in the same system at different levels of granularity. Reading supplies both; vocabulary tools can strengthen compact items; pattern practice can work on larger relationships that repeatedly block fluent production.
