Spacing changes the learning problem
Massed practice keeps the material continuously available. Spacing inserts time between encounters, which means the learner may have to reconstruct more of the memory on the next visit. The interval can make practice feel less polished, but it also provides information about what survived beyond the immediate session.
For language, the return can involve the same Frame in a new sentence rather than a carbon copy of the first item. That lets spacing and variation work together: time changes, context changes, but the learner has to recover the stable structure.
Second-language research gives spacing a direct evidence base
A 2022 meta-analysis by Kim and Webb synthesised 48 experiments and reported a medium-to-large overall effect of spaced versus massed practice in second-language learning. It also found that the size and pattern of effects depended on factors such as retention interval, learning target and practice conditions.
That nuance matters. “Space everything by exactly N days” is not the scientific conclusion. The robust idea is that distributing practice over time deserves serious consideration; the useful schedule depends on what is being learned and what later performance matters.
A return should demand something useful
Simply reopening the same page a week later satisfies a calendar but not necessarily a learning goal. A stronger return asks the learner to retrieve, discriminate or produce. Can you choose the Frame for a new situation? Can you complete it with different content? Can you explain why a tempting neighbour does not fit?

The schedule is a tool, not the curriculum

A practical routine is modest: learn fewer useful Frames, revisit them after a delay, and use the return to do something slightly harder than rereading. The calendar matters, but the decision you make on that calendar matters more.
