Translation vs Paraphrase: Learn the Move, Not the Word Order

Translation is useful until it quietly becomes a construction algorithm. A learner starts with a sentence in one language, replaces words, repairs the grammar and hopes the result is how another language would naturally express the same idea. Functional paraphrase starts from a different anchor: what is the speaker trying to accomplish, and which Frame normally performs that Move in the target language? Metkagram uses this distinction to make cross-language transfer useful without treating languages as interchangeable templates.

Literal similarity and functional similarity are different things

Two sentences can share many dictionary equivalents and still differ in register, implication or typical use. The reverse also happens: two natural expressions can look structurally unrelated while performing almost the same communicative job. Word-level alignment is therefore useful evidence, but it is not sufficient evidence of equivalence.

A Move gives the comparison a second axis. Instead of asking only whether the words match, ask whether the expressions correct the same misunderstanding, hedge the same kind of claim, set the same boundary or perform another comparable job.

Paraphrase is a way to search for the target-language decision

Suppose a direct translation sounds possible but stiff. Paraphrase the intended meaning in simpler target-language words, then look for a recurring Frame that naturally carries that function. This can reveal that the target language packages the idea differently rather than merely preferring different vocabulary.

The process is not permission to invent free translations. A candidate Frame still needs realistic examples and review. Paraphrase helps locate the function; evidence from actual target-language use determines whether the Frame is a good representation.

A Bridge records correspondence without erasing differences

When two reviewed Frames perform the same or a closely related Move, Metkagram can connect them with a Bridge. The relationship can preserve notes about register, context or asymmetry instead of pretending that one side is an exact replacement for the other.

For practice, the learner can begin with an intent, choose the target-language Frame and produce a new sentence. Translation remains available as support, but the long-term path becomes situation to Move to Frame rather than situation to source sentence to word replacement.
